ABSURD.ORG

Good luck getting into this site! The freaky splash page (updated frequently) will tease you until you figure out just where and when to click for access. Submit to the mercies of JavaScript, Java, and the hieroglyphic text; roaming through Absurd.org is a lot like taking a walk through a mirror maze at the circus. For example, When Windows Attack, Part 1, is an eye-popping extravaganza of unknown proportions. The text floats around the screen as if daring you to invest your precious time and energy trying to figure it all out. Relax. Click around. There's a lot this site has to offer, and finding it is half the fun.

Art & Technology Circus

You've heard of people suffering for their art? Now it is your turn to suffer, waiting for someone's art. The home-page file for this site is huge. In fact, there is more art to be found on this one page than you might find on another 10 sites. The result is worth the wait. The Art & Technology Circus is a wonderful roadshow, featuring links to dozens of artists and organizations involved with digital media. Be sure to check out the cyber art of David T. Dienes, John Toth, Lynn Brown and John King.

ABERAXIS - THE PLEASURE PALACE

A sound bite (.wav file) of Porky Pig sets the tone for this site. The Notebook Project covers one page of a notebook each day with images, words, and designs. Click on a cat at the bottom of the home page for a close-up of the kitty.

Eyesited

One of the joys - or curses - of many multimedia art sites is the challenge of discovering paths into them. eYesited is an exception. While you might not know what to expect when you click on menus, they are welcome navigational aids. On the home page, choose from The Ghost, which downloads the complete site, and The Classic View, which downloads a sort of tour. Keep clicking on the same images to proceed through the site (the status bar at the bottom of your browser window shows you the URL to which an image links and can help you tell whether you've visited a link or not.) The site escorts you through a fascinating murky world of text and imagery, presented in a "carrousel-style spiral of hyperlinks." Choose between English and Dutch version. The Vivo plug-in is required.

The Multi-Cultural Recycler

Much like TV signals that bounce off into space, the Net's webcam pictures glimmer for a moment or two, then disappear into the void - until now. Use the Multi-cultural Recycler to select tow or three live webcams from an extensive list of locations. The Recycler creates intriguing composite images from the shots. Call it cyber recycling. You can even set your own source cameras! As to the why of it all: artist Any Warhol remarked that everyone gets 15 minutes of fame. With the help of Recycler, make that 20 minutes.
