CNN

Almost everything that's on the Cable News Network also can be found at CNN's Web site. In addition to the usual news staples, you can play audio and video clips from the cable broadcast, provided you have the right software. CNN Custom News lets you customize the news and information you receive from CNN, and clicking the Desktop Headline link opens a window that displays the latest headlines while you explore other sites. Another impressive feature is complete transcripts of CNN programs, including "Crossfire" and "Larry King Live".

MSNBC

The Goliaths of the computing industry and broadcasting, Microsoft and NBC, have put together a flashy site that links you to a wealth of national, international and local news. You'll find the standard news categories - news, business, sports, technology and weather - and plenty of news audio clips, provided you have the proper plug-ins and audio software. Type your ZIP code at the bottom of the home page, then click the Local News link to read news provided by the local NBC affiliate of your choice.

The New York Times on the Web

One of America's premier national newspapers also has one of the best newspapers online. Like its printed counterpart, the online version of The New York Times is heavy on text and short on graphics, but for first-rate coverage of national and international events, its tough to beat. In addition to the articles you'll find message boards where you can express your opinions, a searchable index of past articles, and an upcoming marketplace that will serve as a portal to top online retailers. The site is free, but you must register the first time you visit.

USA Today

All the features you expect from the printed version are here, making it an excellent news source if you are looking to catch up on current events quickly. You can also shop with several online retailers.
