From Caveman to Chemist is a where Kevin Dunn maintains an open-ended exploration of modern society's technological progress. In the photography tutorial, Dunn presents a brief history of photography as a science in a traceable trail of silver nitrates and bromides. Dunn relates that even today, as in the pioneer days of photography, most photos are based on light-sensitive silver compounds. When light hits a paper coated in silver nitrate or acetate (film) coated with silver bromide, silver ions turn black as they are reduced to metal. This results in an image on paper or a negative image on acetate. With a further introduction to chromate ore and gum arabic, the site's primary photo project is revealed; gum bichromate photography. This is a simple color process that was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
