Chemist is a where Kevin Dunn maintains an open-ended
exploration of modern society's technological progress.
In the photography tutorial, Dunn presents a brief
history of photography as a science in a traceable trail
of silver nitrates and bromides. Dunn relates that even
today, as in the pioneer days of photography, most photos
are based on light-sensitive silver compounds. When light
hits a paper coated in silver nitrate or acetate (film)
coated with silver bromide, silver ions turn black as
they are reduced to metal. This results in an image on
paper or a negative image on acetate. With a further
introduction to chromate ore and gum arabic, the site's
primary photo project is revealed; gum bichromate
photography. This is a simple color process that was
popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Black & White World is a site that actually provides you all the answers on shooting and developing your own black and white prints, where to begin, and where to find the necessary chemicals. This is an excellent resource, with links to traditional photography techniques, as well as digital camera and Web application info. Camera Review offers commentary on almost 700 cameras and pieces of equipment. Penultimate Pinhole Page is a site where John Malcolm offers an introduction to and pointers for pinhole photography, a homespun version of photography for which you can easily build your own camera.. There's detailed information on making and using a pinhole camera and several galleries that will give you a feel for what this is all about. As detailed as the site is, it would be nice if there were diagrams and illustrations. Pinhole Photos is a site that offers instruction on making pinhole cameras and photography techniques. How to Photograph Lighting by the Lord of Lighting provides advice on finding and preparing to shoot lighting, as well as exposures, film, and equipment. Astrophotography Photographer provides concepts, equipment, and techniques for capturing the moon and stars. The Panoramic Image Zone provides help on ultra-wide images, home-made digital panoramic cameras, panoramic photography equipment, and more. |
