| It's been said that truth is the root of
humor, which might explain why many jokes about cultural
or professional groups are published by members of those
groups. While these sites don't reflect the Views of this
publication, we recommend them as legitimate pieces of
Web culture. REDNECK PAGE You might be a redneck if you like this page. THE LAFFATORIUM: NERD HUMOR You might be a geek if you understand this page. ECONOMIST JOKES The world's most indecisive profession gets skewered and cheered here. HUMOR DATABASE This is a great site for the exacting joke lover who demands excruciatingly precise selection criteria. Each joke is rated with standard movie rating codes (G to NR) and content criteria (adult, language, sex, violence, and political incorrectness). Search the database by category, rating, keyword, submitter, and ID number. (Yes, every joke actually has its own ID number.) You can also vote for the jokes you like best and select jokes based on their popularity. MAKING FUN OF SWEDES The Norwegian tradition lives online or so say the Norwegians. THE DEAF JOKES MAILING LIST Run by deaf people for the deaf community, this listserv spits out a deaf joke every day. MR. LEARNED'S LAWYER JOKES AND LEGAL HUMOR PACE Lawyers, law students, and law take a beating at this law student's site. JOKECLUB The joke archive here is organized by the month each joke was added to the site. There are several games and cartoons you can download, and this is one of the few jokes sites that offers video clips. Fresh material can be found in the New Jokes section. OLD JOKES Every joke in this archive is at least 50 years old. Not everyone will understand all of them; the obscure references and stilted language can be maddeningly cryptic without an elder's translation. Do you get this one? Question: "Papa, why is it that dentists call their offices dental parlors?" Answer: "Because they are drawing-rooms, my son." Most of the jokes are annotated with sources. ORACLE SERVICE HUMOR ARCHIVES One of the first joke repositories online, the Oracle Humor Service Archives is still chugging and chuckling along. Although it has gone through a few makeovers (for example, the addition of elaborate graphics), it's still chock-full of jokes and links. Jokes with sexual, religious, adult, racist, or disgusting content are flagged with icons. There's a different joke to check out each day and a listserv to which you can subscribe. Under Links, sites are rated with 1 to 4 stars. Although there were no one-star sites listed at the time of this writing, the site promises to add one-star links when some are found "that don't shut down the week after we review them." DEE DEE'S LOONIE BIN OF JOKES The Loonie Bin has collected thousands of jokes and has made an admirable effort at classifying each. Jokes in unusual categories - from Confucius Say (one-liners) to Lost in the Desert - fill these pages. Other categories are more standard: lawyer, blonde, bar, and "your mom" jokes. There's also an obligatory Monica Lewinsky section. The site enables you to send a joke to a friend, but since you have to cut each joke from its screen and paste it into a form on a different page, the feature doesn't save you much time overusing your own e-mail. REC.HUMOR.FUNNY Rec.Humor.Funny claims to be "the Net's oldest and most popular comedy publication and newsgroup. If you're looking for a joke for a specific topic, drop by and search through more than 6,000jokes. The jokes are all culled in bulk from the rec.humor.funny newsgroup and are presented with little regard for organization. Because of this, the categories are vague: "General jokes 90-92", "Classic Jokes," and "Nasty Evil, Offensive, Politically Incorrect Jokes", are examples. There's a Joke of the Day section that formats the most current newsgroup postings into HTML. Links to the newsgroup are provided throughout the site. HA! Once you desensitize yourself to the merciless bat-rage of yellow smiley faces, you'll be pleased with all the jokes at this site. Check out new jokes, search with key phrases, or pick from more than 30 categories of jokes (although many of the categories overlap with the same jokes - for example, some of the jokes from Groaners are also in Belly Laughs). If you're not fond of adult or off-color jokes, check the box that will tilter them out of your search results. Know a funny one that's not listed here? Submit it under the Add A Joke link. CYBERCHEEZE If you have a hankering to be renowned as a joke aficionado, this site will give you the respect you might not get from Rodney Dangerfield (http://www.rodney.com/). Once you register, any jokes you contribute will be credited to you. The jokes archive includes everything from gross jokes to golf jokes. You can order a free joke to be e-mailed to you each day, and you can easily e-mail jokes to friends just by plugging their addresses into the form below each offering. PRANKSTA'S PARADISE The several hundred practical jokes at this site have been taken from the newsgroup alt.shenanigans or donated by visitors to the site. Categories include The Workplace, Homes & Dorms, Computers, and Cars. Most jokes are simple and harmless (such as having fun with Microsoft Word's AutoCorrect feature by setting it to replace someone's name with "is a dork"). Other pranks, however, require specialized knowledge and elaborate preparation (such as rigging coworker's computer so that every time the victim presses "Enter," the computer reboots). Check out the site's guestbook if you're seeking ideal targets for the jokes on this site. The caps-lock-possessed America Online user who left this message begs some kind of contact: "I WOULD LIKE TO CHAT WITH YOU SOMETIME. OR IF YOU'VE GOT ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT POTATO CANNONS JUST MAIL ME. THANKS." |
